Why business is not expensive
I was just reading a blog post that stated in order to be successful in digital marketing you need to spend money to make money. The worst thing is that this was the very first point in the blog post about successful digital marketing.
Why is it that the accepted way of thinking is that business is expensive? “Be prepared to spend money.” “Going into business is going to cost you.”
To me, this is a ridiculous notion. Why? We spent £100 to start marketpreneurs. That’s it. And quite frankly, we could have done it cheaper.
We have invested more money back into it from the profits we have generated. But even then, we are frugal about where we spend our money.
By continuing on this thought path of business being expensive, all we are doing is putting barriers up. Barriers that are stopping potential entrepreneurs from entering the realms of business ownership.
Realistically, starting a business does not have to be expensive. Check out this list of business ideas that require little to no start-up capital.
Now I am going to show you 5 tactics that will prove starting and running your business is not expensive.
To up the ante I am going to do this in less that 1000 words. In less than 1000 words I will show exactly how to start a successful low-cost business. And that includes my ramblings here.
Working from home
Just like that you have saved yourself £1000s on expensive offices.
Tools like Microsoft Office 365 (£7.90 per month) give you everything you need to stay connected in business. Whether you are running a remote team or taking meetings with clients.
You do not need expensive offices to be successful in business. You need a good idea and a fantastic understanding of how it solves your customers' needs.
You need to be online. Even if you have a shop front, you need to be online. There is no getting away from it.
“But a website it expensive.” Websites are one of the cheapest parts of business these days. In fact, you can build a website for free right now in less than an hour if you want.
Wix gives you everything you need to build a beautiful website yourself in a matter of minutes with their extensive template library. Flesh that out a little bit to make it more tailored to your business and you are good to go.
To get it online you can pay the measly sum of £5.16 per month. That’s lunch one day. It’s nothing and they even give you free hosting and £75 worth of Google AdWords vouchers.
Not only do you have a website, you have some free advertising spend.
“But I need a logo and marketing material”
That’s right, you do need this. But if you think this is expensive or difficult, you are wrong.
There is a tool out there that is going to easily let you design your logo and all of the marketing material you need for…wait for it…that’s right it sounds like tea but it is that word I just love to use…FREE!
Canva gives you templates for almost every digital design asset that you can think of and it costs you nothing. You can even design your logo on the platform.
It’s so so easy.
As of writing this there are over 317 million active Twitter users. That’s not just total users. That is the number of users who are using Twitter on a regular basis.
That means there are over 317 million people who you can get in front of today…for FREE! And it is easy.
I will tell you how to do it. It goes a little something like this.
Search for people using relevant hashtags.
Follow many people.
Some of them will follow you back.
You now have an audience that you can interact and engage with.
This process is made even easier with a low-cost tool like Status Brew that lets you dig deeper into your searches and send automated follow ups to everyone who follows you back.
Doubling down on finding customers
Twitter is great and you can use it to find customers but any good marketer or entrepreneur will tell you that when it comes to advertising, you should never rely on one source.
Well, let’s double down on finding customers for you right now. I am not even going to go the obvious route of another social media channel.
This is something that is so simple. Not only will it get you website visitors but it will help you get found more on Google.
Start but getting your business on Google My Business. Then look at some of the other big names like Yell, Bing, 118. The more the better. Then move onto the local ones in your area.
Just make sure you are spending the time to make your listing stand out.
The more listings you have, the more visitors you will get to your site, the more websites you will have linking to yours (Google likes this).
And that’s it
For just £13.04 in your first month, you have started a business.
What is that to you really? The cost of a burger and fries at Five Guys.
If you really want to, you can start a business right now for next to nothing.
So what are you waiting for?
