Take the leap towards starting your business today
Procrastination is productivity’s worst nightmare. Everyone knows this and it is no different when it comes to starting your business. Having a business idea is great, but without any action that is all it will be, an idea! You always hear, and I was certainly guilty of this, the statement “I have this great idea for a business but I just want to make sure it is perfect before we launch”.
For those of you out there saying this right now, I want you to lean in real close because I am going to let you in on a little secret. It is never going to be perfect! There I said it. As much as we want it to be and as much as we can try to make it so, the fact of the matter is, there will always be something that we miss. Something that we didn’t even know is important until we get out there and launch the business. This is part of the adventure of starting a business.
What is perfect?
Someone once told me that perfection is a made-up word to describe feelings of content. I am not sure if I am a true believer of this statement but I completely understand the point being made. Some of the greatest works of art have flaws. Some of the most amazing architecture has imperfections. You will drive yourself mad, and dramatically decrease your productivity, if you wait until everything you do is “perfect”. I know I became my most productive self when I gave up on my dreams of perfection, and worked towards achievable and realistic goals. At the end of the day, accomplishments are productivity’s friend.
Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you should not aim for greatness in everything that you do. I am saying that you need to learn when something is ready. The only way you will learn and achieve something in the process is by doing it. I know this might sound a little philosophical or abstract but there is so much truth in that statement. The most beneficial thing you can do to start your businesses is actually starting your business. Focus on the small steps that will get you there. To quote the famous philosopher Confucius, “I hear and I forgot. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”
Setting goals is the best way to do this. What do you want to achieve this week or month? Set yourself a timeline and stick to it. Set a date for when you want to launch your business and use this to plan what you need to do for your weekly goals. By taking these weekly steps you will soon start to see your business taking shape and will also find more things you had yet to consider. You can then start to work them out and implement them into your business plan. Soon enough you will realise that you are ready. That great business idea you once had is becoming a reality.
An acronym that is often thrown around when it comes to goals setting is SMART. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time based. This is what I always use to help me reach the targets I set myself.
Become your most productive self
I guess the lesson to take from this is to stop thinking and start doing. If motivation is an issue, we will cover this in future blog posts. In the meantime, check out these 100 motivational tips to get you started, and see how a little motivation will help get your business of the ground.
